If there’s one figure who knows all about racing Arsenal to the Premier League title, it’s Ilkay Gundogan.
The German won five Premier League titles at Manchester City, notably being a part of the Manchester City squad that beat Arsenal to the summit in 2022/23.
Now at Galatasaray, the Gunners will be thankful that the experienced midfielder is no longer on City’s books, given his expertise at winning silverware.
Gundogan might be away from the spotlight in the Premier League, but watching from afar in Istanbul, the 35-year-old is keeping up with what’s unfolding in England.
How many points will Arsenal get from these games?
Ilkay Gundogan has his say on Arsenal’s chances in the Premier League title race
Gundogan is a well-liked figure from his time in the Premier League, but Arsenal won’t like what he’s just said.
In an interview with TNT Sports after losing to Man City in the Champions League, Gundogan shared his prediction that Man City will track Arsenal’s four-point lead down.
When asked if he believes City will once again beat Arsenal to the title, he responded the following.
“I think so, yeah. I think they have the momentum right now.
“The past has always shown, you know, that once they get that momentum, it’s very, very difficult, you know, to get something out of the games against them.”
Fill the blanks, I think Arsenal have a __% chance of winning the Premier League.
Gundogan was eager to remind Arsenal of the winning streaks Pep Guardiola’s side are capable of producing.
“They can go for a long winning streak right now, and it looks like they have to do that because I think both teams play on a very high level.
“I think that’s why the Premier League is also one of the most exciting leagues, because you have all these teams and it feels at the moment, you know, that everyone can get something out of against everyone.”
While the former Man City’s prediction was nerve-inducing for Arsenal, his comment on the need for a winning streak stood out.
Man City’s next five Premier League fixtures aren’t easy
Gundogan made it clear that putting together a spectacular run of form is something that’s non-negotiable if City want to beat Arsenal to the title, but it’ll be far from easy.
Guardiola’s side face tough away trips to Tottenham, Liverpool and Leeds United across their next five games, as well as welcoming Fulham and Newcastle United to the Etihad.
How many points are Man City getting from these fixtures?
While Man City’s fixture list being tough is encouraging, as we’ve seen over the past month, Arsenal need to focus on themselves.
The Gunners also have some tough tests approaching, starting with the trip to Elland Road on Saturday afternoon.
The title race is set to be a thriller, even more so as Arteta knows he cannot miss out for a third time.
