‘It’s not on’: Arsenal star slammed by Newcastle player for what he did at full-time

Arsenal were beaten by Newcastle in a fiery encounter, and tensions were high between the two sides even after the final whistle.

A controversial goal from Anthony Gordon gave the home side a victory in a game where there were a number of debatable refereeing decisions.

Bruno Guimaraes could have been sent off for violent conduct after striking Arsenal star Jorginho in the head, and Jorginho has now been slammed by Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles for what he did at full-time.

Speaking to The Mirror, the defender revealed that he tried to shake Jorginho’s hand at full time, but the midfielder, who was captain for the day in the absence of Martin Odegaard, refused.

“I’m just so glad that we beat them.‌ Their captain, Jorginho, didn’t want to shake my hand after the game,” he stated.

“I was fuming, it’s not on.‌ I would never refuse to shake an opposition captain’s hand, no way. You can have as many arguments as you want on the pitch but shake hands at the end, it’s part of the sport.

“For me, whatever happens on the pitch – handbags or whatever – you show sportsmanship and shake hands afterwards. He didn’t do that, so I’m so glad we beat them. Players like that, I don’t think it’s acceptable.

“A lot of them walked in but I went up to him to shake his hand but he didn’t want to – and he’s their captain! There was a lot of that in the game but that’s football and we managed it well and kept our cool.”

Was Jorginho right to avoid Lascelles?

Whilst some may argue that whoever is wearing the Arsenal armband should follow the sportsmanship within the game and shake the opposition captain’s hand, Jorginho was well within his right to be angry.

Jorginho himself was the victim of a number of dirty fouls from Guimaraes, even beyond the potential red card offence, and Arsenal felt hard done by after the game given the circumstances of the defeat.

Newcastle were dishing out a lot of bad fouls and unsportsmanlike behaviour during the game, and after those 90 minutes, it is hard to blame any of the Arsenal players for not wanting to engage with them after.

Mikel Arteta’s fury after the game is perhaps an insight into how the playing squad also felt, and it was clear that Jorginho had no intention to be friendly to any of Eddie Howe’s side after the way he was treated during the game.
