Jamie Carragher has now revealed whether he views Arsenal or Liverpool as stronger Premier League title contenders.

Arsenal are currently sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table. However, Liverpool are only one point behind them in second.

The two clubs are set to meet at Anfield on Saturday in a huge top of the table clash. The winner of this encounter will spend Christmas in pole position.

Both clubs will feel that they can be victorious this weekend. The Reds have the home advantage, but Mikel Arteta’s side ought to be full of confidence and one statistic suggests that they have a defensive edge over the Merseyside outfit.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher also believes that the Gunners have the edge over his former club in the overall title race this season. Speaking on Sky Sports (20/12/2023), the pundit said, “throughout the season when you look at the points Liverpool have got, they are one of the top teams in the country.”

“But, when you look at the performances, I am not so sure. I need convincing and there is no better way to do that then get a result against Arsenal at the weekend who are top of the table. I just think Liverpool might be a little bit short of the title – I hope I am wrong.”

Can Liverpool keep up with Arsenal in the title race?

Liverpool likely weren’t expecting to be involved in a title race this season. After finishing fifth last time out, and having rebuilt their midfield over the summer, Jurgen Klopp was probably anticipating a year of transition with Champions League qualification being the aim. However, given his side’s current circumstances, the German coach will now believe that they can go all the way.

Klopp knows what it takes to win a Premier League title, after all, having guided Liverpool to glory in 2020.

Arteta, on the other hand, is yet to experience such a triumph. Arsenal came close to becoming champions last season, but ultimately did not have enough to fend off Manchester City. Of course, Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions cannot be discounted this season either.

The Gunners will have learned a lot from their painful near-miss last season. The north London club certainly took steps this summer to improve the squad and add extra depth. They invested heavily in the likes of Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber, and David Raya.

Arsenal are also performing well on the pitch and are deserving of their current position in the table. They were utterly dominant in their 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion last time out, stifling the Seagulls’ attacking threat to an extent not seen in almost 50 matches. If they can do a similar job on Liverpool’s forwards, and cope with what is likely to be a raucous Anfield atmosphere, then they stand a great chance of picking up all three points.
