Jamie Carragher names the one Arsenal star who has seriously impressed him recently

Jamie Carragher has now praised Declan Rice for his qualities on the ball, with the Arsenal midfielder taking his game to a new level this season.

The England international joined the Gunners last summer for a club-record fee, a £105m transfer that has somehow looked like a bargain for Arsenal with Rice arguably the best midfielder in the Premier League this season.

Although Rice was unable to do much last night in Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League, the 25-year-old has shown his quality in a big way this season in north London under Mikel Arteta.

And speaking on CBS Sports, pundit Carragher was full of praise for how Arsenal have unlocked this new side to Rice’s game, with the midfielder looking transformed this season since leaving West Ham.

Carragher said when asked about Rice’s qualities on the ball; “You see Declan Rice taking the set pieces now. He’s a big lad, so you’d normally expect him to be in the box.

“That’s only been happening in the last five or six games, really. I think it shows the quality of the play. He doesn’t get enough credit for me in terms of his ability on the ball.

“You see the actual cross for the first one and the whip for the second chance that Gabriel has, he has got real quality on the ball. Hence why he’s on set pieces.”

Arteta’s end-goal with Arsenal is perfection, for each position in the squad to be filled by the player who does exactly what the Basque manager wants and who the fans want to see wearing the famous red and white.

And Rice does just that, with the former West Ham captain arguably the most complete midfielder in the league after just six months at Arsenal and working under Arteta and his coaches.

There’s nothing the England international can’t do, and for £105m, Arsenal have somehow stumbled onto a bargain signing in Rice, who could play in north London at a world-class level for the next ten seasons.
