Mikel Arteta looks set to get through deadline day without signing anyone but Jamie Redknapp has admitted his surprise at some of Arteta’s comments today.
The Arsenal boss has made no secret in the last day that he was open minded in terms of potential signings.
After losing Mikel Merino for the season, there’s also the potential that Bukayo Saka faces a lengthy spell out as well.
Agree or disagree, if Arsenal do not win the league it would be the greatest failure in the club’s history
Saka’s injury in the warm-up at Elland Road at the weekend is a concern and after Arteta admitted to being keen to assess the market, Redknapp suggested that Saka’s injury could be worse than first thought.
Jamie Redknapp has Bukayo Saka theory after hearing Mikel Arteta’s comments
With Arteta speaking openly with the media ahead of facing Chelsea in the second leg of the League Cup semi-final this week, the Spaniard was obviously asked about transfers.
But after hearing Arteta’s words, former Liverpool and Spurs midfielder Jamie Redknapp admitted he was stunned by Arteta’s comments.
“Yeah, I’m amazed that he said that because when you look at the players that they have at their disposal now, a lot of players coming back from injury. They’ve got Jesus, Gyokeres, Havertz is obviously important to have back. Max Dowman is now coming back from an injury. I know he’s a very young player, but he can definitely come on,” Redknapp commented on Sky.

“It makes you wonder how long Saka may be out for. There might be something else added to this, but Merino’s will be a blow because he can play as a number nine, he can play as a midfield player, and he’s just a good type, you know, he’s a top player.
“So I can understand a bit of frustration not happening, but sometimes you’ve got…you’ve already got a huge squad. Eze’s not getting much game time. I’ve been thinking, you know what, I’ve got a squad here.
“This is, this is more than strong enough still to win the Premier League and adapt on every front, which they have to obviously do.”
What Mikel Arteta said about potential signings
Mikel Arteta’s comments were quite surprising but like any top manager, they’re always looking for new additions if they feel it’s necessary.
Speaking to the press, Arteta was asked about potential signings and he conceded the club was looking.
“We are actively looking at options and we will continue to do that. If we find a solution, we will try to do it. If we don’t, we will continue in the manner that we are now,” Arteta admitted.
Leon Goretzka to Arsenal – yes or no? Tell us why!
“When you lose a big player like this, you need to look. We need players because we play every two, three days.”
With the deadline all but here, it looks like Arsenal will end the day with nothing done and it’s now up to the current squad to get things done.
