Arsenal have had some serious ‘what if?’ players over the years.

You can’t help but wonder how Jack Wilshere’s career would’ve panned out without injuries, while Eduardo could’ve been a star if it wasn’t for his horrific injury too.

However, perhaps the biggest case of unfulfilled potential in Arsenal history is Abou Diaby.

Speaking on The Wildcards Podcast, Jermaine Jenas has named Diaby as one of the very best players he ever came up against.

In fact, Jenas reserved massive praise for Diaby, claiming that he was a mix between Patrick Vieira, Yaya Toure and Cesc Fabregas.

If they were never injured, who would’ve had the better career at Arsenal – Abou Diaby or Jack Wilshere?

Abou Diaby was incredible

Jenas was asked to name the best player he ever faced who doesn’t get much credit.

According to the former Tottenham star, Diaby was an unbelievable talent, up there with the very best in the game.

“Best player you’ve played against that nobody talks about?” Jenas was asked.

“Abou Diaby, mate, this guy had everything. When I say, like, you put a blend of like Vieira, Yaya Toure, Fabregas, whatever you want, like, he had it all. He was massive, he was skillful, you couldn’t get the ball off him,” Jenas said.

“He was horrible to play against and he had that horrible, unfortunate injury. Genuinely, in terms of the ones that nobody talks about, I think Abou Diaby. I had a couple of games against him, which I did not look forward to going and playing against him on a regular basis, because he was top, top, top player, trust me, I felt for him.”

Abou Diaby’s injury history

Diaby had all the talent in the world, but, cruelly, he also had the least luck of any modern day Arsenal player.

Indeed, the midfielder had a horrible run with injuries, and, as the numbers show, he was robbed of what should have been an incredible career.

Diaby could’ve been a superstar, but, instead, he’s a sad case of bad luck and missed opportunity.

It’s truly hard to know how good Diaby could have been if he’d managed to stay fit.
