Manchester United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe has been speaking about Mikel Arteta’s early days as Arsenal manager.

Since Ratcliffe became a minority shareholder at Man United in February 2024, the businessman has had numerous questions to answer.

Gone are the days of United’s dominance in the Premier League, which is good news for the rest of the league, but terrible news for the club.

Arsenal beat Man United on the opening day of the 2025/26 season to inflict more suffering on Ruben Amorim, who has been under the microscope since he took charge in November 2024.

Jim Ratcliffe mentions Mikel Arteta in Ruben Amorim debate

It’s often that Premier League managers are compared based on their journeys at clubs.

Amorim and Mikel Arteta have been mentioned in the same conversation multiple times, with the latest to comment being Ratcliffe.

In an interview with The Times, Ratcliffe expressed his full support for Amorim, comparing the Portuguese coach’s struggles to those of Arteta when he first joined Arsenal

“I remember the pressures that were calling for Sir Alex Ferguson’s sacking in his first two years. Look at Arteta with Arsenal, he faced a tough time in his first two years,” Ratcliffe said.

“We have to be patient and look at the results in the long term.”

The businessman said that he’s giving Amorim three years to prove himself at Man United, having considered how other managers, such as Arteta, have managed to turn things around.

Rival fans will be hoping for more of the same from Amorim, rather than considering the possibility that the 40-year-old could follow in Arteta’s footsteps and come good.

Arteta’s first two seasons at Arsenal weren’t impressive, recording back-to-back eighth-place finishes, but they weren’t close to being comparable to Amorim’s struggles at Old Trafford.

Amorim has managed 50 games at United so far, losing more fixtures than he’s won and finishing 15th in his first season.

To compare, after 50 games at Arsenal, Arteta had a 54% win ratio and had delivered the FA Cup, with Amorim’s current win rate at United being just 40%.

While Arteta’s turnaround being used as a reference point is viable, Amorim’s struggles are on a whole different level, particularly at a club with the history of United.
