Joe Cole is backing Arsenal to beat Atletico Madrid in the Champions League should Mikel Arteta’s team make it past Sporting CP.

Atletico edged past Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday evening to set up a semi-final tie against either the Gunners or Sporting.

If Arsenal could only win one trophy out of the Premier League and the Champions League this season, which one would you pick and why?

Mikel Arteta’s team take a 1-0 lead to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday and will be looking to reach the last four of the competition for just the fourth time in the club’s history.

Ahead of the game, Arteta said this was an ‘unbelievable opportunity’ for his team, and now Cole is backing them to reach the final.

Joe Cole is backing Arsenal to beat Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-final, and thinks the Gunners should be confident.

The former Premier League winner thinks that Arteta’s team are much stronger than the Spanish club in each department.

Ahead of their clash against Sporting CP, Cole is backing them to go through and then to eliminate Diego Simeone’s side in the next round.

When asked whether Arsenal should be confident, Cole told TNT Sports: “Arsenal fans should be very, very confident. They knew they were on the plum side of the draw. The league is one entity.

“I think tomorrow they’ll turn up and perform and go through it in a tough game against a good Lisbon team.

“For the semi-final against what we saw tonight, against this Atletico Madrid team, Arsenal are stronger in so many different areas. The only thing that Atletico have got against them is their experience.”

After facing Sporting and Atletico, it could be either Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain in the final, and that becomes a different proposition altogether.

But the Gunners have a great chance of making history by becoming just the second Arsenal team to ever reach a European Cup final.
