Arsenal’s recruitment team have one of the biggest jobs in football this summer.
The Gunners are Premier League champions, but that does not mean the squad is perfect. If anything, falling short in the Champions League final highlighted that there is still room for improvement, particularly in attack.
That is why supporters have spent the last few weeks debating which forward Andrea Berta should target next, with names such as Julian Alvarez, Morgan Rogers and Rafael Leao all linked.
John Terry has now had his say too, and the Chelsea legend came up with an answer that will surprise a lot of Arsenal fans.
Imagine you are Andrea Berta. Who is your top target for Arsenal in the summer transfer window?
John Terry says Arsenal should sign Harry Kane
One of the biggest talking points around Arsenal this summer is whether they need another striker.
Viktor Gyokeres enjoyed a respectable first season in north London, while Kai Havertz and even Mikel Merino chipped in with important goals when called upon. However, there is still a feeling that Arsenal lack the kind of centre-forward who guarantees 25 or 30 goals every season.
Terry certainly falls into that camp.
Speaking on Piers Morgan Uncensored, the former Chelsea captain argued that the greatest teams are usually built around a prolific goalscorer.
He pointed to players such as Thierry Henry, Wayne Rooney and Didier Drogba as examples of forwards who consistently delivered the numbers needed to win the biggest trophies.
Terry said, as per The Metro: “I actually feel you guys are missing out on a top striker that’s going to get you 25, possibly 30 goals a season.
You look at all the best sides over the past 20 years, Henry done it, Rooney done it, Drogba, every team had that one player up front who produced those goals.”
When asked which player he would sign for Arsenal right now, Terry produced a genuinely unexpected answer.
He replied: “Harry Kane.
“I’m actually not sure who would want to go to Arsenal, that’s the issue. Worryingly, I think you guys for the next two or three years have got the opportunity to dominate.”
Use your best gif to react to Harry Kane being awarded a cannon😂
You can take Harry Kane out of Arsenal, but can you take the Arsenal out of Harry Kane?
Harry Kane to Arsenal would be fantastic, but it’s never going to happen
From a purely football perspective, Terry’s suggestion makes perfect sense.
Kane remains one of the most complete strikers in the world and would undoubtedly score a huge number of goals in this Arsenal team. He has the intelligence, movement and finishing ability to thrive under Mikel Arteta.
There is also another reason Arsenal supporters would love it.
Watching Tottenham’s greatest modern player win trophies in an Arsenal shirt would be enough to send Spurs fans into complete meltdown.
The problem is that reality gets in the way very quickly.
Kane is already 32, would cost a fortune and there is virtually no chance Arsenal will spend that sort of money on a player of his age. Add in his Tottenham history, and this feels like one of those transfers that is fun to imagine but impossible to actually see happening.
