Former Arsenal left-back Kieran Gibbs have shared his view on how the north London derby will play out this weekend.

Arsenal will face their bitter local rivals Tottenham Hotspur in a Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Both of the north London clubs are heading into the fixture in good form, having each taken thirteen points from their opening five matches of the new Premier League season.

Mikel Arteta will know how much a win over Spurs will mean to the Arsenal fans, but it could also have serious ramifications for the rest of their campaign. If the Gunners are to truly challenge for the Premier League title this time around then every point will matter, and they must make the most of home advantage in these big matches.

Ange Postecoglou has quickly inspired an improvement in Tottenham’s form, but Arsenal will still be confident that they can get a win on Sunday.

Kieran Gibbs is backing his former club to claim all three points. Gibbs, who played for the Gunners 230 times between 2007 and 2017, is well aware of the enormity of the upcoming encounter.

Speaking on ESPN, the retired defender said, “to be honest, how I was feeling about Spurs with Harry Kane leaving, I was worried the North London Derby was going to lose its excitement because I just didn’t fancy Spurs.”

“I’m actually happy they’ve started well so it’s nicely poised for the weekend but I feel that Arsenal are going to come up trumps. I reckon Tottenham are going to be brought down a few pegs this weekend. At the Emirates with the way it’s rocking at the moment, I’m going to go 3-1 Arsenal.”

Spurs may miss their talismanic former striker, Harry Kane, on Sunday. The 30-year-old has an excellent goalscoring record against the Gunners. They still carry a threat in the likes of Son Heung-min, James Maddison, and Richarlison, though.

Arsenal will have to be at their best on Sunday, but Arteta will encourage his team to take the game to Spurs. If the Gunners are in top form, and the likes of Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka can shine, then there is every chance that Gibbs’ prediction will come true in the first north London derby of the new season.
