Mohamed Elneny is the longest-serving first-team player currently on the books at Arsenal.
Arsenal paid £5 million to sign Mohamed Elneny from Swiss club Basel in January 2016.
The Egyptian midfielder has featured for the north London club under the charge of Arsene Wenger, Unai Emery, and Mikel Arteta. However, at no point has he been a nailed-on starter. In fact, to date, the 31-year-old has made just 89 Premier League appearances for the Gunners. He has 159 outings to his name when all competitions are taken into account.
Discounting a loan spell with Besiktas in Turkey, Elneny is now in his eighth season on the books at the Emirates Stadium.
Injuries have a played a part in Elneny’s lack of involvement over the years, and he has also spent a period on the sidelines this season. In truth, though, even when fully fit he is still only on the fringes of Arteta’s squad at this stage in his career. Certainly, he isn’t good enough to play a regular role for a side with title-winning ambitions.
Elneny has made is clear that he harbours a deep love for Arsenal. He is also almost certainly a positive and popular influence in the dressing room. Ultimately, though, the 97-cap Egypt international does not represent the long-term future of the club, and needs to be upgraded upon.

Many Arsenal fans have lost patience with Mohamed Elneny
Arteta must already realise that a midfield rebuild will soon be necessarily. On top of Elneny not being of the standard required, both Thomas Partey and Jorginho are now in the twilight years of their careers.
Plenty of Arsenal fans are now also keen to see the club move on from Elneny. Taking to X, one fan described him as a “useless player.” Another supporter dubbed him “One of the worst signing ever.” One other fan accused the player of “No longer being used. No longer playing. Just collecting money.”
One fan urged the club to “let him go….sell him… Or loan him out to other teams.” Another Arsenal supporter insisted that Elneny “Should have been released a decade ago.”
