Arsenal vs Manchester City has become a very heated rivalry over the last two years.
Pep Guardiola’s side were the superior team for a long time, but Mikel Arteta has evened the playing field in recent seasons.
That has led to a few bust-ups during and after games – the most famous one being Erling Haaland telling Arteta to ‘stay humble’.
It’s not just on the pitch where there’s animosity between the two clubs – it exists at board level too.
Why Manchester City have a resentment towards Arsenal
Arsenal and Manchester City haven’t really been the best of friends since Sheikh Mansour bought them.
The Sky Blues lured many of the Gunners’ players away, which led to Arsene Wenger accusing them of ‘financial doping’ (Sky Sports).
Things settled down between the two clubs for a while, but what Arsenal did in 2019 upset City – they appointed Arteta as their boss.
The Spaniard was Guardiola’s assistant at the Etihad, and the process of getting him to Arsenal did not go down well with the decision makers there.
The Independent claims that there has been resentment from Manchester City towards Arsenal since that happened a little over five years ago.
The report adds that “Arsenal subsequently found extreme resistance to Arteta’s attempt to bring over two staff members, including set-piece specialist Nicolas Jover“.

Man City cannot complain about Arsenal appointing Mikel Arteta
Arteta was a very important member of Guardiola’s coaching staff at Manchester City, so they did not want to lose him, especially in the middle of the season.
Arsenal bringing him back annoyed them, but they have no right to complain about anything.
City used their financial muscle to sign the likes of Samir Nasri, Emmanuel Adebayor, Gael Clichy, Kolo Toure and Bacary Sagna from Arsenal.
The Gunners, who were still paying off their stadium debt at the time, couldn’t do much to stop them, and Wenger had to suffer as a result.
If any club should show resentment, it’s Arsenal – not the other way around.
