Viktor Gyokeres is having a tough time in front of goal for Arsenal; however, club legend Martin Keown has just jumped to his defence.
The Swedish international has managed just seven goals in 23 appearances since making the switch to North London in the summer.
Fill in the blank: Arsenal are a ___________________ team when Viktor Gyokeres starts…
Is the Swede making Mikel Arteta's team better or worse?
Question marks as to why Andrea Berta signed Gyokeres have been raised, given his barren spell in front of goal.
But despite his lack of goals, Keown remains a big fan of the 27-year-old and has highlighted why he remains a key part of Mikel Arteta’s team.
Martin Keown loves Viktor Gyokeres’ work rate at Arsenal
Martin Keown has admitted that he is a big fan of Viktor Gyokeres’ work rate for Arsenal after defending his lack of goals.
Gyokeres played a key role in Arsenal’s second goal against Bournemouth as the striker seems to attract defenders, allowing his teammates more space.
When asked about Gyokeres’ lack of goals, Keown told TalkSPORT: “I think he’s a workhorse at the top of the team. They just want to get more from him.
“I think in the previous game against Aston Villa, he made two very good runs, instinctive runs, and he’s got to gamble a little bit more to get away from people in the box.”
Following the win, Declan Rice also leapt to Gyokeres’ defence, highlighting the importance of the striker to the team’s league position.
Agree or disagree: Declan Rice’s first goal doesn’t happen without Viktor Gyokeres…
The former Arsenal defender is hopeful that Gyokeres can continue to build relationships with his teammates in order to get more from himself.
“I think that’s something you can do. You can’t wait for the ball. You’ve got to make up your mind to make those runs. So, that’s something those relationships need to improve,” added Keown.
Gary Lineker also praised Gyokeres following his display over the weekend, and there appears to be a newfound acceptance of his role in the team.
Viktor Gyokeres is making Arsenal statistically stronger
Arsenal have dropped just four points from the 15 Premier League matches in which Gyokeres has started up front for the team.
The only two occasions the Gunners have failed to win when Gyokeres has started were away at Liverpool and the 1-1 draw at home to Manchester City.
Otherwise, Arsenal have become a winning machine with the Swede up top, and it’s clear he is making their teammates even better.
