Martin Zubimendi’s first season at Arsenal has been filled with highs and lows.

The Spaniard looked sensational during the first half of the campaign and quickly formed a superb midfield partnership with Declan Rice.

However, his performances have dipped slightly in recent months as the physical and mental demands of the season have started to catch up with him.

That has led to some criticism from supporters and pundits alike, but Martin Keown believes he knows exactly where the problem lies.

Martin Keown explains the mistake Martin Zubimendi has made at Arsenal

Zubimendi has still had a very impressive debut season overall despite his recent struggles.

The midfielder has brought calmness, intelligence and control to Arsenal’s midfield ever since arriving from Real Sociedad.

However, there have been moments lately where he has looked slightly hesitant in possession.

Rather than playing naturally and instinctively, the Spaniard has occasionally appeared worried about making mistakes.

Keown believes that mindset is exactly what Zubimendi needs to eliminate immediately.

The Arsenal legend feels the midfielder’s biggest issue right now is overthinking his game instead of simply trusting his ability.

Speaking about Zubimendi, Keown said on The Breakdown: “He’s been brilliant.

“I think there’s been a bit of a hesitation in his game recently, which he needs to eradicate now and just be free in his mind.

“That’s why we need to find those solutions for him. And he’s got caught on it.

“But you know, it’s like you don’t worry about mistakes. That’s the biggest mistake you can make.”

🤔 Who starts the Champions League final in midfield: Myles Lewis-Skelly or Martin Zubimendi?

Martin Zubimendi still has a huge role to play at Arsenal this season

Despite the recent criticism, Zubimendi remains incredibly important for Arsenal heading into the final weeks of the campaign.

The Champions League final against PSG will likely be decided in midfield because of the quality both teams possess in that area.

PSG’s midfield trio are dynamic, technical and extremely aggressive out of possession.

Lewis-Skelly arguably has the athleticism and intensity to compete physically in that battle, but experience matters enormously in finals.

Zubimendi is comfortably the most experienced midfielder Arsenal have when it comes to controlling high-pressure European matches.

That is why there is a strong feeling Arteta will trust the Spaniard to start in Budapest despite the emergence of Lewis-Skelly.
