Martin Odegaard has named his favourite footballer on the planet.

The Arsenal captain is often full of praise for his teammates. However, on this occasion, he’s named another player as his favourite in the game today.

Odegaard is a huge fan of Kai Havertz, while Odegaard has praised William Saliba in the past for his performances too.

However, Martin Odegaard’s favourite player nowadays is actually at Barcelona, as speaking to 5ft on TikTok, the Norwegian has named Lamine Yamal as his number one player in the world to watch.

Martin Odegaard names his favourite footballer

Odegaard was asked to name his favourite player to watch, past or present.

Inevitably, Odegaard claimed that Lionel Messi was his favourite player of all-time, while he stated that his favourite player to watch these days is Lamine Yamal.

“Past, well, he’s still playing, Messi, he was always someone I watched a lot when I was young, the left foot, the technique, everything. I will have to say Lamine Yamal, what he’s doing at the moment, at his age, I would say him at the moment,” Odegaard said.

Yamal has been a revelation at Barcelona in recent times, and he’s even made waves at Arsenal.

Jack Wilshere used Yamal as an example when coaching Arsenal’s youngsters in the past, while Arsenal scouted Yamal at one point too.

Martin Odegaard was similar to Lamine Yamal

Odegaard hails Yamal for how good he is at his age, but we mustn’t forget that Martin Odegaard was, once upon a time, hyped in a similar way.

Much like Yamal, Odegaard was making waves at an incredibly young age. Odegaard made his international debut at the age of just 15, and at the age of 16, he signed for Real Madrid.

Sadly, things didn’t go to plan for Odegaard at Madrid, and he would leave the Bernabeu without making much of an impact.

These days, Odegaard is a world-class player and the Arsenal captain.

Frighteningly, at the age of just 18, Yamal has more room to grow and improve as a player, and if he goes along the same sort of development pathway as Odegaard he could well become one of the greatest footballers of all-time.

Yamal is perhaps the brightest young star we’ve seen since Odegaard all those years ago.
