Former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has aimed a jibe at Hollywood icon Leonardo DiCaprio.

Many Arsenal fans may well have mixed feelings about Mesut Ozil. The former playmaker produced some magic moments, and won four FA Cups, in his time at the Emirates Stadium. However, in January 2021 he left the north London club under something of a cloud after he fell out of favour with Mikel Arteta

It has now become clear, though, that Ozil still feels a fondness for Arsenal, and is willing to speak up in defence of the club.

After Film Updates reported that Leonardo DiCaprio is not a football fan, and quoted the actor as saying, “What’s Arsenal?” Ozil took it upon himself to respond on X.

The German took an amusing swing at DiCaprio, saying, “Arsenal Football Club is older than 25 years … so why should he know?”

Ozil is, of course, referencing DiCaprio’s track record of having had romantic partners significantly younger than himself. The 49-year-old is currently thought to be in a relationship with 25-year-old Vittoria Ceretti, as reported by the Daily Mail.

How should Mesut Ozil be remembered at Arsenal?

Plenty of Arsenal fans will have enjoyed Ozil’s jibe at DiCaprio. It was certainly a surreal and unexpected exchange.

Ozil has now brought an end to his playing days, having had spells in Turkish football with Fenerbahce and Istanbul Basaksehir since leaving Arsenal. He can look back on a fine career, in which, beyond his exploits with the Gunners, he won a La Liga title with Real Madrid and a World Cup with Germany, amongst numerous other honours.

He will also hope that the Emirates Stadium faithful only really remember his good times with the club. He is certainly one of the most naturally gifted players to have worn the famous red and white shirt in recent years. He deserves to be recorded in the club’s history as one of the great playmakers to have graced the Premier League.
