Mikel Arteta has some interesting decisions to make in terms of positioning of some of his key players at Arsenal this season.
Indeed, it’s unclear whether Noni Madueke will play on the left or the right this season, while Riccardo Calafiori could play at left-back or centre-back.
Speaking on The Rest is Football, Micah Richards has been discussing some of Arsenal’s key decisions heading into this season, and he’s been discussing Kai Havertz’s role at the club.
The pundit says that Havertz is a brilliant player, but, interestingly, he reckons the German hasn’t been playing in the right position recently, claiming that he’s more of a number 10 than a striker.

Kai Havertz is more of a number 10
Richards spoke about Arsenal’s attacking make-up.
The pundit says Kai Havertz is an interesting piece of the attacking puzzle, noting that the German is more of a number 10 than a striker despite his recent outings.
“And in those situations, how many times have we talked about Arsenal? Once again, into those areas,” Richards began.
“Havertz is brilliant. I think he’s a fantastic player. But he’s more of a number ten. I agree.
You need striker’s instinct. In there, Gyokeres could be the one to get you goals.”
Kai Havertz stats in different positions
Richards says Havertz is more of a number 10 than a striker, but the player’s stats in different positions suggest otherwise.
Indeed, when you look at the numbers, it’s clear to see that Havertz is much more effective as a centre-forward rather than an attacking midfielder.
| Kai Havertz stats in different positions | Games | Goals | Assists |
| Centre-forward | 47 | 19 | 13 |
| Attacking midfield | 37 | 9 | 0 |
Of course, you’re bound to score more as a striker due to the fact that you’re the spearhead of the attack, but the gap in output here is massive.
Havertz has a strange playstyle that doesn’t necessarily lend itself to any particular position, but, at the moment, it appears he’s best used as a number nine.
