Michael Owen says why Arsenal could throw his ‘theory out of the window’ by blowing the title

Michael Owen has been a staunch defender of Arsenal this season but the former Liverpool striker has admitted they could turn his own theories completely on their head.

Owen has looked on and admired Arsenal from afar and has complimented their defensive resilience and ability to win games on more than one occasion.

However, with Arsenal slipping up and the title now in Man City’s hands, Owen is getting concerned.

And while he’s still defending the Gunners, he admits his own theory will be wrong if they do blow it.

Michael Owen claims Arsenal could prove him wrong if Man City win the title

Arsenal still have the title in their own grasp if they simply win every game. Indeed, winning at City next week will be huge and could effectively seal things.

However, speaking for Premier League productions, Michael Owen believes all his past comments about Arsenal will be in tatters if they do lose out.

“I must say I’ve been defending Arsenal to lots of people who always say they always bottle. Do they? I can remember when Manchester City won the Premier League for the first time, a long time ago, they would be coming third and second and getting closer and closer,” Owen commented.

“Liverpool came second a few times. You need to sort of build into winning the league. It’s only Leicester who have come out of nowhere. If they don’t win it this year, my theory is out the window.

“Arsenal have been doing well in recent years, getting closer.”

The biggest title leads blown in Premier League history

There have been some monumental collapses over the years in the Premier League and Arsenal don’t want to add their name to the list a second time.

The eight point lead the Gunners surrendered in 2023 remains one of the biggest leads blown, while Arsenal also handed Man United the title back in 2003.

Top of the pile though is Newcastle United. The Mags squandered a whopping 12 point lead to United after Kevin Keegan’s infamous ‘Love It’ speech backfired.

Man United themselves have handed Arsenal the title, with the Red Devils blowing an 11 point lead in 1998 to gift the title to Arsene Wenger’s men.

Nevertheless, there is a feeling this one will be one of the worst ever if Arsenal do give it up.

Right now, the whole club is on edge and it’s up to Mikel Arteta to sort out any issues.
