Mikel Arteta must now sign £60m defender if he’s serious about Arsenal winning the league

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta would be well advised to consider the signing of Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi in the very near future.

Guehi has been heavily linked with Arsenal over the last few months and the signing would now show real ambition.

Arsenal are currently well stacked at centre-back with the starting duo of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes.

However, with Arteta clearly keen on having elite levels of competition in all areas of the squad, there isn’t too much pressure being asserted.

23-year-old Jakub Kiwior is a strong prospect, perhaps one who is underrated, but he’s not pushing the XI too strongly.

Moreover, although Takehiro Tomiyasu has impressed in his appearances in the middle, he also doesn’t seem close to a start.

Were Saliba or Gabriel to suffer from injury in the near future, the club would have a big problem.

However, if Marc Guehi was waiting as back-up for Arteta at Arsenal, there would suddenly be an exciting opportunity at hand.

Arsenal don’t necessarily need to sign Guehi, but he would represent a huge upgrade to their squad.

Guehi would give Arteta a genuine chance of winning the league with Arsenal

Although Arsenal have spent a significant amount of money quite wisely in the last few years, there’s still work to be done.

It may have seemed unrealistic in the past, but it’s not out of the question that Arsenal could part with £60m for Guehi in the near future.

Moreover, with Pedro Neto and Ivan Toney seemingly both targets as well, the trio could prove excellent investment.

Arteta has built a brilliant starting XI, and he almost has the squad options to match.

Jurrien Timber’s injury has been very frustrating – a player who seemed transformative for Arteta’s flexibility at the back.

However, Guehi would also give Arteta such opportunities at Arsenal.

And if it was a shame to see Rob Holding leave the Emirates this summer, his move to Palace could now have paved the way for Guehi to head the other way.
