Arsenal have reached a breakthrough in new contract talks with Mikel Arteta.

Mikel Arteta is set to pen a new deal with Arsenal. 

The Gunners have been keen to extend the Spanish coach’s spell in charge of the club for some time.

Arteta has been expected to agree to a new contract for some time, but it would now seem that a full agreement has been reached. 

This will come as welcome good news to Arsenal fans, especially as many will be feeling trepidatious ahead of Sunday’s North London Derby clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

Arsenal will be without several key players against Spurs, and Arteta faces a number of difficult selection decisions. With Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino, and Declan Rice, amongst others, all ruled out for this fixture the mood at Arsenal has been low, but news of Arteta’s extension will lift spirits.

David Ornstein provides Mikel Arteta contract details

According to journalist David Ornstein, reporting on X, Arteta has now agreed new terms with Arsenal.

He stated: “Mikel Arteta agrees new three-year contract as Arsenal manager. 42yo Spaniard was into final 12 months of previous deal but any uncertainty now removed – fresh terms run until 2027. Huge boost for [Arsenal] before north London derby.”

The Arsenal hierarchy will now feel safe in the knowledge that Arteta will be unlikely to be prised away from the Emirates Stadium in the next couple of years.

What Mikel Arteta must now achieve at Arsenal

Arteta has transformed Arsenal since his appointment as manager in December 2019.

At that time, the Gunners had fallen out of the Champions League, were burdened with a number of unwanted players, and the relationship between the club and the fanbase was at an all-time low.

The former midfielder was able to make the Gunners competitive again, clear the deadwood, and heal the rift with the supporters. The Gunners are now genuine contenders for the major honours in the game again, and atmospheres at the Emirates Stadium are better than ever.

Now is the time for the next step forward. Arteta has promised Arsenal fans that trophies are on the way, and the club will expect him to deliver on that vow within the span of this new contract.
