Arsenal to make William Saliba red card appeal decision

After a nightmare incident against Bournemouth, William Saliba was shown a red card for Arsenal that heavily impacted the game.

With the Gunners losing on the south coast, attention turned to the fact that the centre-back is set to miss a huge clash against Liverpool through suspension.

However, there may be some reprieve as the club do have the option to appeal the decision if they feel it wasn’t a justified sending-off.

It’s something Mikel Arteta was quizzed on ahead of the Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk, where he revealed it will be down to others to appeal the decision.

“I leave that more to the club,” Arteta said in his press conference on the situation. “I understand the circumstances and as well other examples that are very clear in the same position and they will have to decide it.”

It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will have taken that option or not ahead of their deadline to appeal.

Mikel Arteta shares Ethan Nwaneri plan

Ahead of the Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk, Arsenal fans have been calling for Ethan Nwaneri to be given a chance.

The 17-year-old midfielder has been dropped into the team on occasion as he looks to fulfil his promise at the top level.

However, some supporters are eager to see him back in the team for some Champions League action in midweek.

Arteta’s answer on his plan for the youngster is a little bit more measured though, as he outlines the journey ahead.

“I think it’s identifying moments [to play Ethan Nwaneri], understanding where he is, where the team is and what is the optimal moment to throw a player in that context.

“He’s already done a lot in a short period of time so let’s take it step by step and make sure those steps are consistent and can allow him to grow in the manner and form that we want in the team.”

Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka injury update

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has given contrasting injury updates on a duo of Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka ahead of the Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk.

The former has been out since early October with an ankle injury he picked up on international duty with Norway, while the latter suffered a muscular problem while away with England in November’s international break.

With the pair being so crucial, there are many hoping that they will be back in action as soon as possible.

Giving an update on them both, Arteta told the press: “They are closer, and they’re both progressing really well. Martin is still not fit. With Bukayo, let’s see how he feels today and in the training session we have later.”
