Mikel Arteta reveals the real reason he took Noni Madueke off vs Man City

Arsenal’s substitutes at half-time against Manchester City were welcomed, but Noni Madueke being hooked was a surprise.

There wasn’t an Arsenal player more threatening in the first half against Man City than Madueke. 

The right-winger was the source of all things dangerous for the Gunners early on, making fans shocked to see his number go up at half-time.

Mikel Arteta swapped Madueke for Bukayo Saka, a change that sparked mixed emotions, as the winger didn’t deserve to be substituted.

In a tactically stale first half, Madueke shone bright, attempting two dribbles and firing two shots on goal, as per Sofascore. 

The Englishman’s early impact made his substitution rather confusing, but Arteta has now confirmed why he took the summer signing off so prematurely.

Speaking to the media after the draw, as relayed by journalist James Benge, the Arsenal manager confirmed that Madueke was injured. 

Arteta said that the 23-year-old was struggling with an issue ‘very early in the match’, which led to him being hauled off at the interval to be replaced by Saka.

Saka’s return came at the perfect time, but it’s yet more unwanted injury news for the Gunners so early into the season.

Bukayo Saka returned to impress against Man City

Arsenal didn’t miss Saka at all while he was out injured, which is credit to Madueke, who has had a searing start to life as a Gunner. 

That being said, when Saka was introduced at half-time, the Emirates was reminded just how good the Hale End product is, and what he offers to the team.

Not only was the England international a one-versus-one threat, but he also showcased his playmaking ability, recording two key passes.

Man City would’ve loved Arsenal’s lack of attacking potency in the first half, but the visitors couldn’t live with Saka in the second.

The academy graduate was fouled three times and was involved in nine duels, five of which he won.

It was an action-packed return for Saka, who announced his fitness to the Premier League with an incredibly impactful display.
