Mikel Arteta says one thing Arsenal did last season was ‘very important,’ he wants a repeat

Arsenal took Manchester City all the way to the final day in the Premier League title race last season, but fell just short.

Arsenal were outstanding in 2024, winning 16 of 18 Premier League matches, but could not pip Man City to what would have been their first title since 2004.

It is the second time Mikel Arteta has challenged Pep Guardiola for the league, but his side look more prepared than ever to compete again next season.

Arsenal did a lot right last season, recording the best defensive record in the league, whilst also scoring freely at times, and their record against the top clubs was exceptional as they were unbeaten against the ‘big six.’

Speaking to Arsenal club media, Arteta praised his side for their outstanding record in big games, and highlighted the importance of beating the other top clubs in the division.

“Yeah, that was very important,” he stated of Arsenal going unbeaten against the rest of the big six.

“First of all, to give ourselves the chance to compete for the league but as well to show the consistency, the capabilities and the quality against the top sides in the country.

“That we can actually beat them all in a consistent way and we can do it being dominant and deserving to win, which in my opinion is the most important thing.

“So that was another big stride but it’s not enough so we’re going to have to improve it again.”

Arsenal’s incredible record against the rest of the top six last season

Arsenal beat every single other side in the top six last season, and did the double over Manchester United with a 3-1 win at the Emirates and a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford.

Arteta’s side fought back to draw 2-2 away at Chelsea, before Kai Havertz netted a brace against his old side in a 5-0 victory at home.

There was frustration in the home North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur as they drew 2-2, but a 3-2 away win for Arsenal was very satisfying indeed.

A 1-1 draw against title rivals Liverpool was impressive, before a statement 3-1 victory at home in January.

Arsenal ended their Man City hoodoo with a 1-0 win in North London in October, before shutting them out in a crunch title clash with a 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium.

If they can avoid defeat again, but turn some of the draws into victories, Arsenal can back themselves for the Premier League title next season.
