Mikel Arteta’s Champions League record as an Arsenal player and manager

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has helped the club return to the Champions League, and he will now be aiming to go one step further.

Arsenal qualified for the Champions League for over 20 consecutive seasons, but the first campaign after Arteta retired from football saw them finish fifth and miss out on a spot.

Arteta then took over three years to rebuild Arsenal into a side capable of competing amongst Europe’s best as a manager, and he led the Gunners to the quarter-finals last season before Bayern Munich eliminated them.

This was a stage which Arteta never reached as an Arsenal player, and his overall record in the competition pales in comparison to other managers he could face in the Champions League, including Simone Inzaghi.

Mikel Arteta’s record in the Champions League as Arsenal manager

Arteta has managed 11 games in the Champions League so far, but his away record leaves a lot to be desired.

Arsenal have won five of Arteta’s 11 games as manager, with three draws and three losses. Of these five wins, just one came on the road, as Arsenal beat Sevilla 2-1 in the 2023 group stage.

Arsenal have scored 18 goals in that time, and also needed penalties to beat Porto after 1-0 home victory cancelled out their away defeat, whilst they have conceded just 10 goals in that time.

Mikel Arteta’s record in the Champions League as an Arsenal player

Arteta did feature in eight Champions League games during his time at Paris Saint-Germain and Rangers, before making 23 appearances in the competition at Arsenal.

His only goal came in 2014 as he scored a penalty in a 3-3 draw with Anderlecht, in which Arsenal threw away a 3-0 lead, whilst he assisted Gervinho’s opening goal in a 3-1 victory over Olympiakos in the 2012-13 group stage.

Arteta was sent off as Arsenal lost 2-0 away at Napoli in 2013-14 after receiving two yellow cards, which ruled him out of the first leg of the knockout rounds against Bayern Munich.

The Spaniard won 11 of his 23 appearances in the Champions League as an Arsenal midfielder, with five draws and seven losses, and he failed to progress beyond the round of 16.

This therefore means that having already reached the quarter-finals as a manager, his one season as a coach in the competition eclipsed five campaigns as a player in terms of European progress.
