As far as Premier League managers go, Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola are two of the most recognisable in the current era.

Guiding both Arsenal and Manchester City, the two head coaches are friends who go way back, having worked together in their time at the Etihad Stadium.

Eventually, Mikel Arteta moved from assistant coach under Pep Guardiola to become the number one at the Emirates Stadium.

After helping to rebuild Arsenal, the Spanish head coach is often head-to-head with his compatriot for the Premier League title, along with plenty of other trophies.

With Guardiola set to hit the 1,000-match milestone in management, here’s a look at how the managers compare in meetings so far.

Mikel Arteta’s head-to-head record with Pep Guardiola as managers

Pep Guardiola has seen it all in management, whether it was with Barcelona B and the senior team, Bayern Munich, or Manchester City.

The head coach is now set to smash the 1,000-game barrier, as he continues to forge his own path as one of the greatest managers in the modern era.

Looking to join him in the same bracket of discussion is Mikel Arteta, who has done well in rebuilding Arsenal so far, but is missing the trophies to go with it.

Arsenal’s clashes with Man City have been a monumental event in recent seasons, as the record between Arteta and Guardiola balances out.

Arteta has faced Guardiola more times than any other manager, with 15 clashes between the two across all competitions.

While there have been only four wins in those meetings, the tide has started to turn in favour of the Gunners.

Arsenal haven’t lost in any of their last six encounters with Man City, winning three and drawing three.

It’s the type of record that has seen Arteta close the gap on his old friend, while also ensuring that the title race can also turn in his favour.

There is some way to go to get it fully turned around, though, and it remains to be seen how long Guardiola is likely to stay in the Premier League.

Where Mikel Arteta ranks among other managers against Pep Guardiola

While Arteta’s four wins in 15 attempts may seem like a low total, only three other managers have been able to inflict more defeats on Guardiola.

They are Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho, and Jurgen Klopp, showing the calibre of manager it takes to reach those heights.

Arteta will be looking to chase down the likes of Ancelotti and Mourinho in the near future, with at least one game against Guardiola still coming this season.

However, those clashes are far from routine victories, and Arsenal will be keen to get another one over their rivals.
