Myles Lewis-Skelly has signed a new long-term contract at Arsenal.

The teenager’s old deal was set to expire in the summer of 2026, and the Gunners had been working on an extension for months.

On Thursday, Arsenal announced that Lewis-Skelly had penned a new deal, and that is excellent news for everyone associated with the club.

Now, some behind-the-scenes details about what happened during a key contract meeting have just emerged, and it is mind-blowing.

What Myles Lewis-Skelly personally did in front of everyone during Arsenal contract negotiations

Myles Lewis-Skelly’s confident personality is one of the many reasons why Arsenal fans love him.

The teenager, as he showed in his breakthrough season, is absolutely fearless on the pitch, and he is very assured off it as well.

That was evident when talks took place over a new contract for the talented 18-year-old at Arsenal in recent months.

The Athletic have revealed that instead of letting his agent — who happens to be his mum — and his lawyer speak, it was Lewis-Skelly who stood up and spoke to everyone in the room.

In the boardroom that day were Mikel Arteta, Per Mertesacker, and then-sporting director Jason Ayto, among others, and they all looked at the youngster in surprise.

The report revealed: “Lewis-Skelly described his experiences at Hale End and the core values it has instilled in him. Then he spoke about his own values and outlook.

“He touched on his belief in visualisation and gave examples of other athletes and the processes that have inspired him, such as Kobe Bryant’s ‘mamba mentality’ for having a killer instinct on the court. Lewis-Skelly spoke about his desire to keep the No. 49 shirt, because of what it means to him, the club and its supporters.”

The experience for those watching on has been described as ‘unique’ because it is very unusual for a player to stand up and speak during contract talks — it is ‘unheard of’ for an 18-year-old to do it.

How Arsenal executives felt about Myles Lewis-Skelly’s speech during talks

The people in the boardroom during the meeting with Lewis-Skelly’s camp have been involved in dozens of contract talks over the years.

The Arsenal executives would’ve seen everything in their experience, but watching a player as young as Lewis-Skelly do the talking was surprising.

The report reveals that there were ‘reservations’ among the executives because they were not accustomed to a player presenting.

But, ‘there was also enormous pride at seeing an academy player, a local boy, take the floor and speak with maturity and conviction’, the Athletic writes.

Lewis-Skelly is still only 18, but actions like this show that he has the maturity of someone who is significantly older.
