Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher were both seriously impressed by something one Arsenal player did against Manchester United.

Arsenal kept their Premier League title dream alive with a 1-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

The Gunners were not at their best in the North West. Mikel Arteta’s side struggled to create a high volume of chances, and could not take control of the midfield battle. Thomas Partey was called out by Arsenal fans for producing a particularly poor display.

However, the Gunners ultimately needed only one moment of quality to claim this vital three points. Kai Havertz was able to take advantage of being played onside by Casemiro before picking out Leandro Trossard from close range. The Belgian attacker made no mistake as he converted from close range.

This was the 29-year-old’s 12th Premier League goal of the season so far. Trossard has been described as the best finisher in the Arsenal squad, and he has been in blistering form in recent weeks. He has given the Gunners an all-important clinical edge at the business end of the season.

His goal against Manchester United did not require any kind of magnificent finish, as it was a simple tap-in from close range.

However, it took some clever movement and a decisive run from Trossard in order for him to be in the right place at the right time to apply the finish. The former Brighton and Hove Albion man made a late dart to get ahead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and prod the ball over the line.

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher heap praise on Leandro Trossard

Gary Neville analysed the goal on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football (13/10/2024, 19:20), saying: “I used to think the best wingers, they wait for you to look over your shoulder and then when you turn back, they will go. Honestly, the very best wingers in the world.

“Trossard is clever enough, intelligent enough. Think about it. If I am Wan-Bissaka and I just do that [looks over his shoulder] and then look back, Trossard runs there.”

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher then added: “It’s Freddie Ljungberg-like, those runs.”

Neville then summed-up, calling Trossard: “Brilliant.”

This is not the first time that Trossard has been compared to Freddie Ljungberg. The Swedish winger scored a number of important goals during the run-in as Arsenal claimed a league title triumph in 2002. Ljungberg was also a key figure in the Invincibles squad, which went through entire 2003/04 Premier League campaign unbeaten on their way to winning another title.

Trossard has established himself as a key player for Arsenal in the second half of this season, and is now a nailed-on starter on the left wing.
