‘No doubt’… Paul Merson makes bold Arsenal title claim in warning to Man City

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has now assessed the Gunners’ chances in this season’s Premier League title race.

Arsenal are very much in a title race, but they face a tough task in overcoming both Liverpool and Manchester City.

As things stand, both the Reds and Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions hold numerous advantages over the Gunners. For a start, Arsenal are underdogs due to a lack of previous winning experience.

In more tangible terms, though, with both sides having played 25 top flight games, Liverpool remain two points ahead of Arsenal at the top of table. Manchester City currently sit in third place, two points behind the north London club, but with a game in hand which could see them leapfrog them into second.

Of course, how all these clubs fare in their head-to-head encounters could well prove decisive. Arsenal have already faced the Merseyside club twice this season in the Premier League, taking four points from those two clashes. Most recently, Arsenal beat Liverpool 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

Earlier this season, when the Gunners hosted Manchester City, Mikel Arteta’s side were also victorious. On March 31st, Arsenal will travel to the Etihad Stadium in what will be a hotly-anticipated match-up.

Before then, though Manchester City must travel to Anfield. Arsenal fans will be keeping a keen eye on that fixture, as it is another that could sway the title race. 

How does Paul Merson think Arsenal are faring in the title race?

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has already admitted that he wants to see Arsenal crowned as champions this season. However, few would consider Arteta’s men to be favourites.

Paul Merson has now had his say on the Gunners’ chances of coming out on top this season. The Arsenal icon, who made over 400 appearances for the club in his playing career, said on Sky Sports, “they’re right in this title race, there’s no doubt about that. They’ve got some nice fixtures coming up…it’s back on to Man City now. The pressure is on Man City.”

Of course, title races are nothing new to Manchester City. Having won the title in five out of the last six Premier League seasons, they have proven that they can cope with the pressures that come with it. Arsenal certainly shouldn’t hold out too much hope of Manchester City slipping up too many times between now and the end of the season.

All the Gunners can do is focus on winning their own matches. If they can do that consistently between now and the end of the campaign then they will have given themselves an excellent chance of landing the title.
