Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira has spoken out about his failed move to Boca Juniors this summer.
Speaking to TNT Sports, the Uruguayan international revealed that nobody from the South American club contacted him over the window. Torreira was very open over the summer about his desire to move to Boca.
The 25-year-old midfielder struggled hugely during the COVID-19 pandemic. Torreira tragically lost his mother to the virus with the Arsenal star being unable to return home to Uruguay.
Moreover, Torreira struggled to play regular first-team minutes with Atletico Madrid. The midfielder spent the season on loan with the La Liga champions. Though the former Sampdoria ace was unable to make much of an impact.
Indeed, the midfielder was desperate to return to South America to play for Boca, the club he and his family support. Though Torreira said never looked likely during the summer.
The midfielder said: “I expressed my desire and my feelings for being part of a club that I admire very much, that I don’t even have the opportunity to meet him because I couldn’t even get to know La Bombonera, but nobody contacted me.
“With Juan (Riquelme), we exchanged some messages because he wrote me about the death of my mother. But when I returned to Madrid to finish my year of contract with Atletico, I was losing hope. I began to understand that it was very difficult.”
With Torreira now back in Italy with AFC Fiorentina on loan, it is unlikely that the midfielder will return to Argentina anytime soon with the midfielder likely to have a starring role for La Viola this season.
