Arsenal club captain Martin Odegaard ensured debutant Charles Sagoe Jr received an ovation from the fans on Wednesday evening.
Charles Sagoe Jr was a surprise inclusion in the Arsenal starting XI that took on Brentford in an EFL Cup clash on Wednesday. Mikel Arteta handed the versatile winger his debut in the match, and he did not look out of place in senior football.
Sagoe Jr had a solid, if slightly quiet debut. The 19-year-old was not overawed by the occasion, showed flashes of quality, and did the basics consistently well. This display has now given him a platform to begin building his career in senior football on.
It is, of course, a huge moment for any academy prospect to make their debut for the Arsenal first team. Martin Odegaard was on hand, and showed his instinctive leadership skills, to ensure that Sagoe Jr enjoyed the occasion and the spotlight.
After the final whistle, the Norwegian playmaker was seen pushing Sagoe Jr forward, ahead of his teammates, and towards the travelling Arsenal fans so that he could receive his own ovation.

Sagoe Jr makes promising start to Arsenal career
Arteta also had his say on Sagoe Jr after the match. As quoted by the club’s official website, the Spanish coach said, “every time we can, we have to look in our academy and give chances. Charles was probably one of the most consistent players we had in the under-23s for a few months. He’s been training with us quite a lot, and it’s about giving opportunities to people.”
The teenager earned this opportunity and did himself proud on the night. He may well be earmarked for further opportunities throughout the campaign. His versatility certainly makes him a useful option to have in the squad, as he can operate on either flank and even lead the line if required.
There is plenty of competition for places at Arsenal, and the north London club have lots of talented youngsters on their books, including the likes of Ethan Nwaneri, Amario Cozier-Duberry, Reuell Walters, and Lino Sousa. As things stand though, Sagoe Jr may well be leading the pack.
