One of Edu Gaspar’s worst ever signings at Arsenal will now reunite with him at Nottingham Forest

Former Arsenal sporting director Edu Gaspar has officially joined Nottingham Forest.

The Brazilian spent over five years at the Emirates Stadium, first as a technical director and then as a sporting director.

Edu resigned from his position at Arsenal in November last year, and he spent several months on gardening leave.

On Monday, it was confirmed that Edu has been appointed as the Global Sports Director by Nottingham Forest, which is a significant upgrade from his role at Arsenal.

At the City Ground, Edu will cross paths with a player he signed at the Emirates.

Edu Gaspar and Matt Turner set for a reunion at Nottingham Forest after Arsenal exits

Arsenal signed Matt Turner from New England Revolution in 2022.

Nobody really expected the Gunners to sign a player from America, but Edu Gaspar thought the USMNT goalkeeper would be a good addition.

Turner spent just one season at the Emirates and played seven games. He was never going to threaten Aaron Ramsdale for the number-one spot at the time.

That is why Arsenal decided to replace him after just 12 months, and Nottingham Forest signed him on a permanent deal in 2023.

Turner played 21 times for Forest in his debut season, but he was loaned out to Crystal Palace just a year later. He played just four games there.

Now, just as Edu takes charge at Nottingham Forest, Turner will return to the club, and the pair will be reunited.

Turner was brilliant to have around the squad at Arsenal, but from a footballing perspective, it must be said that he was a very underwhelming signing.

After selling him once, we expect Edu to do it again at Forest in the coming weeks.

Edu made a few other terrible goalkeeping decisions at Arsenal

Edu deserves a lot of praise for starting the Arsenal project under Mikel Arteta, but he made plenty of mistakes along the way.

Dealing with goalkeepers was not Edu’s strong point.

The Brazilian could’ve done better with the Emiliano Martinez and Bernd Leno situation — Arsenal should’ve made more money when they sold both of them. Ramsdale was also sold for far too little.

To add to that, the signings of Turner, Runar Alex Runarsson and most recently Neto were all poor — none of them were good enough for Arsenal.

Andrea Berta has been at the Emirates for a few months and he has already signed a top-class goalkeeper in Kepa Arrizabalaga as a backup. The Spaniard is a serious upgrade to Neto and is arguably better than every goalkeeper Edu signed, barring David Raya.
