Paul Merson has just predicted how many trophies Arsenal will win this season after Carabao Cup heartbreak

Arsenal had the chance to become the first English team to win the quadruple, but that dream is now over.

The Gunners went into the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City as slight favourites, and they started the game very well.

However, Pep Guardiola’s side completely dominated Arsenal in the second half and deservedly won the cup.

Mikel Arteta’s side could still win the treble, but Paul Merson thinks they will end the season with just one trophy.

Paul Merson says Arsenal will only win the Premier League this season

Arsenal are still in a great position despite losing the Carabao Cup final.

The Gunners are in the quarter-final of the Champions League and the FA Cup, where they will face Sporting CP and Southampton respectively.

To add to that, they are nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table and are the favourites to win it this season.

Merson is confident that Arsenal will become the English champions, but he thinks they will crash out of the two other competitions.

He wrote on Sky Sports: “Will it impact the Premier League? Arsenal are too good for the other teams they have to play against in the run-in, so they will beat those teams.

“But watching that game and that second half, I don’t see Arsenal winning anything else but the Premier League. Man City are still in the FA Cup. Watching that game, you’d be shocked if Arsenal went back to Wembley and beat them.

“And then in the Champions League, I look at Barcelona – who Arsenal are on course to play in the semi-finals – and Arsenal haven’t got the pace to trouble Barcelona’s high line.

“The forward players aren’t electric – they’re not like Anthony Elanga or Anthony Gordon, who caused Barcelona problems in the last 16. I’d dread to think what Barcelona could do to Arsenal.”

Micah Richards completely disagrees with Paul Merson

Merson seems to be getting a bit too carried away with Arsenal’s second-half performance against Manchester City.

Yes, the Gunners were poor, but every time they have slipped up, they have gone on a lengthy unbeaten run. There’s no reason why they can’t do it again.

Merson’s comment about Barcelona is really strange. He says Arsenal don’t have ‘electric’ players – has he forgotten that Gabriel Martinelli and Noni Madueke still play for the club?

Gary Lineker also questioned whether Arsenal had the players to hurt the Spanish giants. Micah Richards, who claimed that the Gunners would batter Barcelona, named Martinelli and Viktor Gyokeres.

He said: “Martinelli. 100%. Martinelli would absolutely love to play against that, without doubt. Even (Viktor) Gyokeres. Gyokeres is not the quickest, but he’s a strong runner. If you watch all his goals before at Sporting, that’s what he used to do.

“So, I think if they play a high line against Arsenal, Arsenal will absolutely batter them.”
