Arsenal will once again challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title.

The Gunners have gone toe-to-toe with Pep Guardiola’s side in each of the last two campaigns and have arguably been unlucky on both occasions.

In the 2022/23 season, William Saliba’s injury cost Arsenal the title, while last season, they missed out by two points despite losing just one game in 2024.

Arsenal fans will be hoping that third time’s the charm, but City are already two points ahead of them in the Premier League table.

Paul Merson shares what Arsenal must do to win the Premier League title

Paul Merson won two English league titles when he was at Arsenal.

The pundit knows what it takes to win the big prize, and he has seen his old club fall just short in each of the last two campaigns.

Arsenal’s main problem last season was their attack. Even though some of their forward players got some big goals, nobody could do what Erling Haaland did at Manchester City.

However, Merson believes that Arsenal’s hopes of winning the Premier League title are still dependent on their defence.

The former Gunners midfielder has claimed that Arsenal will only have a chance of winning the title if they concede a maximum of one goal per game in the rest of this season.

If they don’t, City will retain their crown again.

Merson wrote on Sportskeeda: “From now until the end of the season, Arsenal should not let in more than one goal in any football match, that should be their aim.

“They are always going to score goals, that’s not an issue. If they keep it tight at the back, they have a chance of winning something.”

There’s another thing Arsenal should do to win the title

Merson has a point, even the great Sir Alex Ferguson once said that attack wins you games, defence wins you titles.

However, Arsenal’s defence has been sensational over the last two seasons, and we think they are more than capable of limiting opponents to a maximum of one goal per game.

That isn’t the only thing that has to happen for Arsenal to win the title – they also need some luck with regards to injuries.

The Gunners have the likes of Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Oleksandr Zinchenko all out injured at the moment, which isn’t ideal at all.

If Arsenal can get them all back in the next month and keep a mostly fit squad until the end of the campaign, we are convinced they will go all the way in the title race.
