Phil Jones suggested that one thing Arsenal did over a decade ago is still plaguing Manchester United.
Arsenal and Man United’s rivalry is not what it once was, as the Red Devils continue to underachieve.
After the Gunners beat Portsmouth 4-1 to progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup, Man United were knocked out of the competition by Brighton.
It’s only January, but already, Man United have nothing to play for this season other than aiming for a high Premier League finish.
Old Trafford fell almost silent when United’s FA Cup journey came to an end, with the result made even worse as Danny Welbeck scored the winner.
How far do you think Arsenal will go in the FA Cup in 2026?
Phil Jones says Man United fans were sad when Danny Welbeck joined Arsenal
Seeing an academy graduate return to Old Trafford and score the winner in the FA Cup isn’t unfamiliar for United.
Welbeck did it with Arsenal back in the 2015 FA Cup, making his mark in his first season with the Gunners.
After Man United’s defeat to the Seagulls, Phil Jones was talking about Welbeck, rewinding back to his 2014 transfer to Arsenal.
“I remember Welbz when he first joined United, and he was a terrific talent then. Should he have left Old Trafford?” Jones asked when speaking to BBC Sport.
The former Man United defender continued by admitting that many fans were sad to see Welbeck leave the club permanently to join Arsenal, even stating that some would take him back right now.
“I think a lot of fans were sad to see him leave. You look now, and I think they’d take him back in a heartbeat.”
It’s been just under 12 years since Welbeck signed for Arsenal from United, and still, by Jones’ take, the Red Devils are missing his presence.
Welbeck is now outperforming Viktor Gyokeres
Welbeck might not have been the striker Arsenal fans desired when Arsene Wenger signed him in 2014, but now, he’s a whole different animal.
The Englishman is playing the best football of his career at Brighton, showing no sign of slowing down at the age of 35.
Agree or disagree, Danny Welbeck would have more of an impact at Arsenal than Viktor Gyokeres
After the horrifying injury Welbeck sustained at Arsenal, it’s so heartwarming to see the striker doing so well, but one aspect of his form is worrying.
Welbeck is outperforming Viktor Gyokeres this season, scoring two more goals than Arsenal’s summer signing, despite making fewer appearances.
Man United might still be aching from Welbeck’s transfer to Arsenal, but arguably, the Gunners are too, seeing their former striker hit levels greater than their current option.
