Piers Morgan has hit out at Mikel Arteta over some recent comments made by the Arsenal manager.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has recently bemoaned the lack of squad depth currently available to him.

Arsenal currently have a number of players that cannot be called upon to play for the club, for various reasons. Jurrien Timber and Fabio Vieira are both sidelined with injuries, and Arteta recently confirmed that Thomas Partey is not yet fit enough for a return to action against Nottingham Forest this evening.

On top of that, Mohamed Elneny did not return from the Africa Cup of Nations in time to feature at the City Ground, and Takehiro Tomiyasu is currently competing at the Asia Cup with Japan.

Having picked up knocks against Crystal Palace last time out, Declan Rice and Gabriel Magalhaes are both subject to late fitness tests ahead of the clash against the Midlands outfit.

The likes of Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, and Gabriel Jesus, amongst others, have all also missed key matches at times this season due to fitness issues.

Despite these availability problems, Arsenal have not been able to bolster their squad in the January transfer window so far. A lack of available transfer funds has restricted the north London club’s ability to strengthen via the market.

Arsenal fan Piers Morgan lashes out at Mikel Arteta

Speaking yesterday, as quoted by TNT Sports, Arteta aired his frustrations with the lack of options available to him. The Spanish coach said, “it wasn’t possible to do any January deals. We didn’t have capacity to improve the team in the way that we think we want to improve it. So we decided not to do something yet. We have one of the thinnest squads in the league, that’s for sure.”

Taking to X to respond to this, TV personality and Arsenal fan Piers Morgan said, “so, we’ve got one of the thinnest squads (incl no top striker) but won’t be doing anything about it? Sorry Mikel, but you’re talking incomprehensible nonsense.”

Arsenal spent heavily in the recent summer transfer window, to bring Rice, Kai Havertz, Timber, and David Raya to the Emirates Stadium. That has hampered their ability to invest in new players this month, as the club have to be careful not to exceed the limits of Premier League spending rules, or else they run the risk of being hit with the same charges that have recently been levelled against Everton and Nottingham Forest.

Beyond any dramatic goings on in the final days of the transfer window, Arteta will have to work with the options that are already available to him for the rest of the season. If the likes of Partey and Tomiyasu can remain fit and available until the end of the campaign, Arteta ought have enough options at his disposal to negotiate the challenges ahead.
