Since he signed for Arsenal in 2022, Fabio Vieira has gone to play for Arsenal on 49 occasions, scoring three goals and providing nine assists.
At the time of his purchase, both Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar seemed over the moon that they’d been able to bring Vieira to Arsenal, a player showing so much promise at FC Porto.
Fast forward two years and Vieira is now back at Porto on loan, and all of his rich potential is still yet to be unlocked.
When bringing the Portuguese midfielder to the club, Arteta originally said: “I am very excited that we have identified and signed such a special talent.
“Fabio is a very creative player that will bring high quality and versatility to our attacking play” – something Arsenal fans have seen very little evidence of.
How is Arsenal loanee Fabio Vieira doing at FC Porto?
Of course, Vieira’s loan back at Porto is clearly designed to inspire an upturn in the midfielder’s trajectory, something that hasn’t quite happened as of November.
After returning from an injury in the summer, Vieira has now made 10 appearances back at his boyhood club, yielding just one assist in the process.

Now regaining his fitness, the Arsenal loanee is beginning to start more games on the right wing.
However, his latest performance in Porto’s 4-1 defeat to rivals Benfica was labelled something of a disaster.
Vieira’s performance was reviewed by Noticias ao Minuto, who said there was no evidence to suggest this was a player good enough to play for Arsenal.
They wrote: “Fabio Vieira added nothing to the game.
“Anyone who doesn’t know that the Portuguese player arrived at Dragao from Arsenal and has only seen this game will have a hard time believing it.”
Ethan Nwaneri is busy stealing Fabio Vieira’s role at Arsenal
Of course, when Martin Odegaard was injured in September, it looked as if Arsenal made a mistake loaning Vieira to Porto.
However, many then felt as if that decision was because of the club’s faith in Ethan Nwaneri.
Nwaneri is now starring for England at youth level, an attacking midfielder with so much talent.
And in all honesty, with Nwaneri only set to get better, it is hard to imagine how Vieira will ever get a proper chance at the Emirates Stadium again.
A player with excellent ability, but one who has failed to show the consistency to match Arsenal’s ambitions.
