Matthew Upson has noted one trait Leandro Trossard has that makes the Arsenal forward a different option compared to Gabriel Martinelli.

The Belgian international replaced the 22-year-old in Mikel Arteta’s starting XI last night as Trossard scored the crucial goal that dragged Arsenal into a penalty shootout against FC Porto, with the Gunners coming out on top.

Whilst David Raya was the hero on the night for Arsenal, the north London side simply would not have progressed had it not been for Trossard and his sensational finish after some good work from Martin Odegaard.

And speaking on BBC Sport’s coverage of the match, pundit Upson was full of praise for Trossard and how the former Brighton & Hove Albion star took his goal and how the finish separated the Belgian from Martinelli.

Indeed, Martinelli’s composure in front of goal has come into question at parts this season, and Trossard showed last night what the Brazilian could become if he can learn this valuable skill.

Upson said on Trossard’s composure: “Super composure from Leandro Trossard. This is the difference he brings compared to Gabriel Martinelli, that composure and calm.

“Joao Mario’s position is poor, he isn’t aware of the run from Trossard, that out to in movement. A great ball from Martin Odegaard and great composure from Trossard to slot the ball in. Good passing move from Arsenal.”

Martinelli’s potential is clear for everyone to see, with the winger arguably the player in Arsenal’s current squad with the highest ceiling out of everybody.

The 22-year-old showed last season just good he can be when full of confidence and playing his ideal style, yet this year has been a different story with Martinelli struggling in front of goal.

Yet the Brazilian can change this if he learns to become more composed in front of goal, a skill that has benefited Trossard massively this season and resulted in the Belgian becoming a key player for Arsenal.
