According to a report from Goal, Arsenal are interested in appointing former Valencia boss Marcelino as their new manager.

Raul Sanllehi has reportedly approached the Spaniard to take over from Unai Emery. The Gunners aren’t alone in the race as the report reveals that fellow Premier League side Everton are monitoring his situation as well.

Marcelino had a brilliant record at Valencia where he led the club to Copa del Rey success last season. The Spanish side also made it to the semifinals of the Europa League which is a phenomenal achievement considering their squad.

The Spaniard is a brilliant tactician and would be a great appointment for most clubs in the world. However, his style of play is tragic and choosing him to take over from Emery makes no sense whatsoever.

Marcelino, like Emery, prefers a counter-attacking style of football. He sets his side out to be compact in defence before hitting the opposition on the break. The system worked pretty well in Spain but failed in Europe as evident with Arsenal battering them 7-3 over two legs back in May.

Arsenal would be wasting their attacking talent with the appointment of someone like Marcelino. The Spaniard will also not have the luxury of defenders who are comfortable while absorbing pressure. His appointment makes very little sense considering his similarity with Emery, Arsenal should back out before it’s too late.
