Arsenal have been without a trophy since their FA Cup success in Mikel Arteta’s first season at the club in 2020.

Mikel Arteta and his young Arsenal side have run Manchester City right to the wire in the last two Premier League campaigns but ultimately just fell short.

This season, the club are already out of the FA Cup and their Carabao Cup hopes are hanging by a thread following a 2-0 first-leg defeat to Newcastle United.

Victory in the North London Derby though could keep Arsenal’s league ambitions alive, with a win moving them within four points of league leaders Liverpool.

However, one Arsenal legend is becoming frustrated that the final piece to the Gunners jigsaw seems to keep getting overlooked and is ultimately costing the club great success.

Ray Parlour believes Arsenal are missing a ‘top goalscorer’

Speaking to Hayters TV, former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour has expressed his frustration at Arsenal’s lack of a striker but understands that the club have to find the right fit.

Parlour stated: “You can’t knock Arsenal for just going out and wasting money and buying someone for the sake of it, they’ve got to fit in to their plans.”

The former England international then went on to claim that Arsenal could dominate English football if they can find that elusive number nine. He stated: “It’s not rocket science, sooner or later you’ve got to get a top striker.”

Parlour also stated: “In order to dominate the Premier League and even the Champions League you’ve got to have a good, reliable goal scorer.”

Parlour highlights an attribute Mikel Arteta should look for in a new striker

With Bukayo Saka injured and Gabriel Jesus out with a ruptured ACL added to the muscular problem of Ethan Nwaneri, Arsenal have found it tough keeping players fit and available this season.

Now a pundit, Arsenal legend Parlour has highlighted the importance of availability in a player and has compared the current crop to some of the strikers that he played with in his time at the Gunners.

Parlour stated: “You can’t have a player that gets injured all the time. I go back to my teams, Henry never got injured, he was never out for long periods of time. Ian Wright was mostly fit when he was playing and Dennis didn’t miss many games.”

Furthermore, the former Gunners academy graduate alluded to the fact that in a long, tough season you need to be able to rely upon your best players being fit, available and ready to contribute to the cause.

Despite missing several key players, Arsenal and Arteta will be hoping the electric atmosphere generated by fans will be enough to get them over the line against arch-rivals Spurs in their next game.
