Former Arsenal star Eddie Nketiah scored a 97th-minute winner to help Crystal Palace beat Liverpool in the Premier League.
Arne Slot’s side won the Premier League title last season, and they are the absolute favourites to do it again after breaking the British transfer record twice in the summer.
Liverpool haven’t looked great at all this term and were, in ways, lucky not to drop points in every game they had played up until Saturday.
At Selhurst Park, Slot’s luck ran out, thanks to Arsenal Academy graduate Nketiah.
Ray Parlour shares what Eddie Nketiah’s winner vs Liverpool means for Arsenal
Whether we like it or not, it has to be said that Liverpool are the favourites to retain their Premier League crown this season.
The Reds were already very strong, but with the additions of Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, they are the team to beat.
Many people in the game were of the opinion that Liverpool would be unstoppable this season, and after winning each of their first five games despite not playing well, there was more belief in that statement.
However, Crystal Palace deservedly beat the Reds on Saturday, courtesy of a dramatic goal from Eddie Nketiah in the 97th minute of the game.
That brought an end to Liverpool’s unbeaten run, and Arsenal legend Ray Parlour is delighted because that all but keeps the Gunners’ Invincibles record intact.
He tweeted right after the game: “Unbeaten for another season!”
An unlikely Premier League club could still break Arsenal’s Invincibles record
Arsenal’s Invincibles record after going the entire 2003/04 season unbeaten has stood strong all these years.
That shows just how difficult an achievement it was from Arsene Wenger’s side.
If any club had the chance to match that record, it was Liverpool after all their signings this summer, but that will not happen following their defeat at Selhurst Park.
Parlour and other Arsenal fans breathed a sigh of relief on Saturday, but one club are still unbeaten in the Premier League this season – Crystal Palace.
It is extremely unlikely that the Eagles will avoid defeat in every game until the end of the campaign, but they have already gone 18 games without defeat.
We think Arsenal’s record is safe, but if Palace go on to match it, you can’t do anything but stand up and applaud them.
