Arsenal started their Europa League campaign with a victory tonight against Rapid Wien.
The Gunners were made to work really hard, especially after Bernd Leno’s mistake gifted the Austrian giants a 1-0 lead six minutes into the second half.
Goals from David Luiz and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave us the win in the end, but it was our debutant who stole all the headlines.
Thomas Partey had an incredible game for us in the centre of the park. The Ghanaian showed his class as the game went on, and his calmness in midfield helped us dominate the game.
Arteta heaps praise on Partey
Mikel Arteta was thrilled with Partey’s display on his first start. The Arsenal boss claimed that the former Atletico Madrid man held the midfield all by himself in the second half and he did it in fantastic style.
He told Arsenal’s official website: “He looked really solid and really comfortable. I think he held the midfield by himself in the second half when we were a little more open and started to take more chances and attacking certain spaces with some players. But I think he was fantastic tonight and there is much more to come from him.”
Partey was truly magnificent. He started really well and went from strength to strength as the game progressed.
The Ghanaian completed 50 passes in the opposition half, completed five tackles, won four aerial duels and recovered the ball eight times – all more than any other player on the pitch. (Squawka)
Arsenal now have a very difficult game against Leicester City at home on Sunday.
The Foxes will come in with a ton of confidence after their 3-0 win in the Europa League, but with Partey in incredible form and with Auba back among the goals, we should be able to get the win at the Emirates.
