Reiss Nelson explains the one thing his Arsenal teammate always tells him to do

Arsenal star Reiss Nelson has now opened up about his on-field relationship with Eddie Nketiah. 

Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nketiah certainly know each other well. The striker has previously described his Arsenal teammate as being like a brother to him, and has confirmed that he is his closest friend at the club.

The pair have had a long time to grow their bond. Nelson has been on the books at Arsenal since he was nine-years-old, and was there when Nketiah joined the Hale End academy system in 2015.

Both 24-years-old now, they played through the age groups together, a couple of years ahead of fellow current first-teamers Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe.

It is therefore unsurprising that the two attackers have excellent chemistry on the pitch. This connection came to the fore once again on Tuesday evening, as Nelson set up Nketiah to score his first ever Champions League goal against PSV Eindhoven.

After the match, Nelson admitted that Nketiah regularly demands that he tries to set him up in front of goal. As quoted by the club’s official website, Nelson said, “he’s on me to try and assist him a lot so I always have it in the back of my mind if I can get an area where I know he can turn and get the shot off, I will play him and he done the business today.”

Is there more to come from Reiss Nelson at Arsenal this season?

This assist was a just reward for Nelson, who was the Gunners’ stand out performer on the night. He certainly impressed plenty of Arsenal fans who now want to see Mikel Arteta make greater use of the winger.

Nelson has very much been on the fringes of the Arsenal squad this season. He has made just six substitutes appearances in the Premier League. He has shown in his Champions League and EFL Cup outings, though, as well as with his goalscoring contributions last season, that he can have an impact in this team.

It will be fascinating to see if Arteta begins to rely more heavily on Nelson in the coming weeks, especially as Leandro Trossard’s form appears to have dipped of late. The Belgian is usually the first back up option to Gabriel Martinelli on the left flank. Nelson now deserves a chance to prove his worth in that position, though. Nketiah would certainly enjoy sharing the pitch with Nelson more often.
