Report: 28-year-old Arsenal star offered a new contract but PL rivals' offer is better

According to The Guardian, Arsenal have offered Emiliano Martinez a new contract after his brilliant recent performances. The Argentinian came in for Bernd Leno after the German’s injury last season and instantly became a fan favourite.

Martinez played a big part in helping Arsenal win the FA Cup as well as the Community Shield. His performances certainly warrant a new contract and Mikel Arteta is right to give him one. However, things could get really complicated soon.

The report claims that although Arsenal have offered him a new deal, an agreement is still far away. Aston Villa are interested in signing Martinez this summer, and they are willing to offer the goalkeeper a better salary as well as a starting spot if he agrees to join them.

The second part of Villa’s offer could tempt the Arsenal man to make the switch this summer. Martinez has waited almost a decade to become the number one at the Emirates, but despite his excellent displays last season, Arteta cannot guarantee him that role.

Arsenal could have to sacrifice Martinez for the greater good

If and when Villa make their offer, Arsenal will have a big decision to make. Arteta is in desperate need of funds to secure his transfer targets, and Martinez, thanks to his performances last season, will command a very good fee this summer.

Arsenal could be tempted to sell him as a result which would be a real shame. Martinez is Arsenal through and through, and it will be really sad to see him leave. However, if his sale helps us get someone like Thomas Partey or Houssem Aouar, it is a deal we will have to do for the greater good.
