According to a report from Nice-Matin, Arsenal board have made Patrick Vieira their favourite to become the new permanent manager.

The Gunners legend is currently in charge of Ligue 1 side Nice who are struggling in 14th place. Arsenal are yet to find a permanent replacement for Unai Emery who was axed last week. Vieira would be a popular choice among the fans but it would be a huge gamble at the same time.

The Frenchman is at his second club as manager after his two-and-a-half-year stay at MLS side New York City FC. Vieira is close to 150 games in charge as a manager but is that enough to get the Arsenal job?

The former Arsenal skipper is, without doubt, one of the greatest players ever to grace the Premier League. However, a lot has changed since his playing days and the pressure a manager has to work under is incomparable to that of a player.

Vieira is a real leader and is the kind of character Arsenal have missed for ages. However, just his leadership qualities aren’t enough and appointing him would only make sense if the board are prepared to give him a lot of time irrespective of results.

In Arsenal’s current state, it is unlikely that we will guarantee our next manager two years to build the team. As interesting an appointment as Vieira would be, it is a huge gamble and one that Arsenal cannot afford to take at this moment.
