Report: After Nelson and Nketiah, Arsenal prepare contract offer for player with 'big capacity'

According to Football London, Arsenal now want to offer Alexandre Lacazette a new contract in the coming days.

The Frenchman was one of Arsenal’s best players last season. Only Nicolas Pepe was directly involved in more goals than Lacazette for us last term, and that has forced Mikel Arteta and Edu to reconsider their decision about his future.

Many people expected Lacazette to be sold this summer due to his age and his contract situation. He has less than a year left on his deal now, and the fact that he is 30 already convinced people that we should cash in on him.

However, it looks like Laca will soon be offered a new one-year contract. The report claims that it is very likely that the former Lyon man will stay at the Emirates next season – even if he rejects a new deal.

Arsenal would reportedly welcome offers for him if he refuses to put pen to paper. Clubs from Italy, Spain and France are all said to be keen, but Laca will have to accept lower wages if he wants a move to any of the interested foreign clubs.

That, financially, makes no sense at all for Laca and his agents, which is why he will probably see out his contract at Arsenal next season.

Does Lacazette deserve a new Arsenal contract?

Lacazette, labelled as a player with ‘big capacity‘ by Unai Emery’ was directly involved in 20 goals in all competitions in a season where Arsenal struggled to score. That is a very impressive return considering the circumstances, and he deserves a lot of praise for that.

Arsenal reportedly considering a new contract for him makes sense. It’s unlikely that he will be sold this summer and letting him stay on his current deal will mean that he can walk away for absolutely nothing in 12 months time.

The Gunners are being smart here, but it is unlikely to work. As a free agent, Lacazette will be able to command a far more lucrative contract from a club of his choice next year. Signing a new deal at Arsenal would eliminate that option, which is not good at all for him on a personal level.

Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson were offered new deals to protect their value recently. (The Athletic) Arsenal are right to hand Laca a new deal as well, but we expect him to reject that offer, see out his contract and leave for free next year.
