According to a report from Goal, Arsenal staff are expecting Unai Emery to be sacked this week. The report claims that it is a matter of when and not if that the Spaniard is relieved of his duties but he is expected to stay on at least until the end of Thursday’s Europa League game.
The fans booed the players off after a terrible 2-2 draw against relegation-threatened Southampton. Lacazette’s stoppage-time goal gave us an undeserved point and many felt that it was the final nail in the coffin.
An Arsenal source was quoted by Goal saying: “It’s about results and we are not getting them. It just feels like a matter of time. It’s not like the club is on its knees or anything. The mood is still pretty good, but you are now just waiting to be told the news.”
The international break was an ideal opportunity for Arsenal to take the decision but they failed to do so. A new manager will now have very little time to work with the squad but with winnable games against Norwich, Brighton, West Ham and Standard Liege coming up, it’s now or never.
Freddie to take over temporarily:
The report reveals that Arsenal don’t quite have a ready replacement for Emery at the moment. The board are likely to take their time with the new appointment with Freddie Ljungberg expected to take temporary charge in the meantime.
Massimiliano Allegri and Mikel Arteta appear to be frontrunners for the job at the moment but nothing is certain just yet. Arsenal will have to be extremely careful with their next appointment. Any mistake there will take us down Manchester United’s post-Ferguson route and that hasn’t been a pretty sight.
