Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk will possibly have to make do without the services of attacker Robin van Persie when the Dutch take on England in an international friendly on Wednesday after the Arsenal ace picked up an ankle injury.
Van Persie sustained the knock in his side’s 2-1 friendly loss against Benfica on Saturday and stayed behind in the dressing room at half-time due to the ankle problem after opening the scoring in the 34th minute.
It’s not yet known how serious Van Persie’s injury is, but it’s unlikely that the 28-year-old will take any risks ahead of the start of the 2011-12 Premier League campaign. Therefore, he could well decide to withdraw from the Holland squad.
“It is an ankle problem, I don’t know how bad it is,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said on the club’s official website.
The match between England and Netherlands will be played at Wembley and kicks off at 21:00 CET.
