Journalist Fabrizio Romano has discussed the high regard that Arsenal centre-back William Saliba is held in within the game.
William Saliba made his long-awaited debut for Arsenal on the opening day of last season. Since then he has been an absolute revelation for the north London club.
Saliba originally signed for the Gunners in 2019, joining in a deal worth £27 million. However, the French defender then had loan spells Saint-Etienne, Nice, and Marseille, delaying his Arsenal bow.
Since breaking into the team at the Emirates Stadium, though, Saliba hasn’t looked back. The 10-cap France international is now a key figure in Mikel Arteta’s squad.
Saliba has impressed with the maturity of his performances. His calmness and composure in pressurised situations is matched by his physical gifts, as his pace, power, and technical prowess are amongst his key strengths.
Arsenal may well struggle to keep hold of the player throughout his career, as the young defender seems destined to establish himself as an absolute superstar. However, the club will be delighted to have secured his services for the foreseeable future, as the player signed a new long-term contract in July 2023.

Saliba key to Arsenal plans for success
Other clubs have taken notice of Saliba’s quality, though. Journalist Fabrizio Romano has referenced the player’s growing reputation within the game.
Writing on Substack, Romano said, “Saliba is fantastic. He was already shining at Marseille on loan, then last season and this season, amazing. He’s a top, top player. He’s considered one of the best centre backs in the world in the industry, and Arsenal are so happy with him. I think Arsenal did a masterpiece by extending his contract.”
It is vital for Arsenal that Saliba can stay fit throughout this campaign. He sustained an injury towards the end of last season, and shortly after he was sidelined the Gunners’ Premier League title push faltered.
If Arsenal are to seriously compete for major honours over the next few years, then Saliba will surely be at the heart of any success the club enjoys. On a personal level, he will want to continue improving and establish himself amongst the elite.
