Mikel Arteta has done a fantastic job at Arsenal.

Yes, there is no league title to show for it, but over the past few years, Mikel Arteta has turned Arsenal from pretenders to contenders.

Once upon a time, Arsenal were genuinely a mid-table side, struggling for any sort of consistency and not qualifying for Europe.

Now, they are Champions League contenders who could well win the Premier League title this season.

And yet, for some reason, Mikel Arteta is being questioned and criticised at every turn.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Sean Dyche has been discussing the conversations around Arteta, and he thinks he knows why the Spaniard is being criticised so much.

If Mikel Arteta wins the Premier League, where does he rank among the ALL-TIME great Arsenal managers?

Sean Dyche says Mikel Arteta is criticised because of his spending

Dyche thinks there’s a simple explanation for why Mikel Arteta gets so much criticism.

According to the former Everton boss, Arteta is under scrutiny because he has spent a lot of money building this Arsenal team, but with no success to show for it yet.

“I think they’re being questioned because they have spent money. Arteta’s been deemed to do a very good job over the last few years.”

“They have invested. Can you go and do it? Can you go and get it over the line?

“It’s a different thing being a contender than winning it, you know what I mean? It’s very difficult.”

Mikel Arteta’s most expensive Arsenal signings

There’s no denying that Arteta has spent a lot of money in pursuit of his goals at Arsenal.

However, the same can be said of every Premier League club.

Chelsea have spent billions assembling their squad, and they are nowhere near Arsenal, while Liverpool broke the British transfer record twice last summer and are lagging behind too.

When you look at Mikel Arteta’s spending, it has to be said he has spent well.

Mikel Arteta’s most expensive Arsenal signingsFee
1. Declan Rice£105m
2. Kai Havertz£65m
3. Martin Zubimendi£60m
4. Eberechi Eze£58m
5. Viktor Gyokeres£55m

Declan Rice has been a fantastic addition, Kai Havertz is a key player in this team while Martin Zubimendi is also incredibly important.

Eberechi Eze is ever-improving, and while Viktor Gyokeres has been underwhelming, this still isn’t a bad hit rate in terms of signings and performances.

There are other managers who should be blamed for overspending in the Premier League before the finger is pointed at Arteta.
