Shearer has two-word response for Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta after post-game rant

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has now responded to an outburst from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

Newcastle United ground out a 1-0 win against Arsenal in a Premier League clash at St James’ Park on Saturday evening.

The Magpies had a controversial goal to thank for their three points. Despite a VAR review checking three separate incidents surrounding the goal – the ball appearing to go out of play, a potential foul on Gabriel Magalhaes, and an offside check – it was ultimately decided to let the goal stand. 

After the match, Mikel Arteta launched into a furious tirade about the goal that he believes ought to have been chalked off. As quoted by the official Arsenal website, the Spanish coach said, “it’s not a goal, for many reasons it’s not a goal, for more than one reason at least it’s not a goal.”

“And there’s too much at stake here, we put in so much effort, and it’s so difficult to compete at this level. And it’s an absolute disgrace. Again, I feel embarrassed, I’ve be more than 20 years in this country, and this is nowhere near the level to describe this as the best league in the world”

On Twitter, Gary Lineker said, “Mikel Arteta having a proper rant post match, “It’s embarrassing. It’s a disgrace.” To which Alan Shearer simply responded, “What was?”

Mikel Arteta has more to worry about than refereeing blunders

Clearly, Shearer, given his history with the Tyneside outfit, is emotionally predisposed to fall down on the Newcastle side of this particular debate. It will be interesting to see if the PGMOL come out and make any kind of statement regarding the incident.

Arteta may well feel that Arsenal were robbed against Newcastle. However, he will also recognise that the Gunners lacked cutting edge when going forwards themselves. The north London club did not create nearly enough chances, and the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Eddie Nketiah were well marshalled by the Newcastle defence.

The Arsenal boss has every right to feel aggrieved about the manner in which his side conceded. However, that cannot mask the fact that the Gunners did not do enough to deserve to win this match in their own right.

There are certainly improvements needed from this Arsenal side. The attack is yet to really click on any kind of consistent basis so far this season. More than any referring errors, a lack of goals will cost the Gunners this season.
